Karaoke time! 🎤 Sing along if you know it, too! 🎶 🎵
.

“Home (家 jiā)”, sung by Kit Chan, was composed by Dick Lee in 1998 as the first in a series of yearly songs commissioned for Singapore's National Day Parade, together with the other NDP song that year titled as City For The world. It has English and Chinese versions, both sung by Kit. The song was well received, being considered one of the best National Day Songs, and is still being used in National Day Parades as of 2019.

🏠Many of you know the word 家jiā (home), but do you know what the Chinese character represent? 🤔🤔
.
💡家 = 宀 + 豕
💡Home = pigs 🐖 under roof
.
🐖Pigs have been central to the Chinese farming culture for decades. Until quiet recently, Chinese people lived in close proximity to pigs; most families raised a few of them in or near their homes. Having pigs in the house gave the ancient Chinese a sense of security. This idea of owning sufficient food indicates that desired stable life.

🎋🐼You might have seen the previous two treasures - Brush 笔bǐ and Paper 纸zhǐ, but probably not these two, the Ink 墨mò and Inkstone 砚yàn! 🎋
.

墨mò ⚫️
The ink is commonly made by burning pine or another wood in an earthenware container, mixing dense ash with glue, and compressing it into an ink stick, or another form. An unusual antique piece of ink is shaped like a ruyi, a scepter tribute offering, that conveys wishes for happiness and good fortune. After shaping, it takes about two years for the ink to dry, in a totally dry and dark environment.
.
砚yàn 🔳
An inkstone is literally a stone mortar for the grinding and containment of ink. Traditional Chinese ink is usually solidified into sticks for easier transport and preservation. Water is usually kept in a ceramic container and sprinkled on the inkstone, which has a generally flat surface. The inkstick would be ground with the flat surface of the inkstone. By mixing ink with different amounts of water, the calligrapher or artist can create different densities and innumerable shades of black and gray.

🎋Introducing the Four Treasures of the Study (文房四宝 wén fáng sì bǎo) 👏🏼👏🏼- the brush (笔bǐ), ink (墨mò), paper 纸zhǐ and inkstone (砚yàn) used in Chinese calligraphy and painting.
.
笔bǐ 🖋
Brush is the oldest Four Treasures member, the oldest brush so far dates to Han dynasty (202 BC–220 AD). Brushes are generally made from animal hair, but some believed that the "first hair taken from a baby's head" might bring good luck in the Imperial examinations.

Brush handles are commonly constructed from bamboo, but special brushes may have handles of sandalwood, jade, carved bone/ivory, or other precious materials.
.

纸zhǐ 📝
Paper was first developed in China in the first decade of 100 AD. Previous to its invention, bamboo slips and silks were used for writing material. Paper is usually made from parts of the rice plant, like rice straw or rice flour. The paper in the old days is very thin and light. Thus it can adsorb ink easily.

宣纸(Xuānzhǐ) is soft, fine-textured, moth resistant, has a high tensile strength, and remarkable longevity for such a product – so much so that it has a reputation for lasting "1,000 years".

The Chinese believe that “one's writing is a reflection of one's inner self” (字如其人zì rú qí rén). Only calligraphers with high morality and strong values could write beautiful calligraphy. Only a calm, righteous, and steadfast mind could yield a calm and steady hand.
.

Chinese calligraphy(书法shū fǎ) is the writing of Chinese characters as an art form, combining purely visual art and interpretation of the literary meaning.

According to Stanley-Baker, "Calligraphy is sheer life experienced through energy in motion that is registered as traces on silk or paper, with time and rhythm in shifting space its main ingredients."
