What is HSK Chinese?

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), or 汉语水平考试, is a standardized test recognized globally and used by the People’s Republic of China to assess the Mandarin proficiency of non-native speakers. It consists of six levels (HSK 1 to HSK 6), evaluating listening, reading, and writing skills. Administered by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (or Hanban) under the Ministry of Education of China, the HSK is a key tool for foreign learners and overseas Chinese to measure their mastery of the language.

What You’ll Learn:

Vocabulary

Each level of HSK requires mastery of a specific number of Chinese words.

HSK 1 focuses on 150 basic words,
HSK 2 focuses on 300 basic words,
HSK 3 focuses on 600 basic words,
HSK 4 focuses on 1200 words,
HSK 5 focuses on 2500 words,
HSK 6 covers over 5,000 words.

Grammar

The test progressively introduces more complex grammatical structures as you advance through the levels. Including on how to construct sentences, ask questions, and understand different tenses.

Listening Skills

The listening sections test the ability to understand spoken Chinese in various contexts, from simple conversations to more complex dialogues and monologues

Reading Skills

The reading sections require comprehension of written Chinese, including the ability to identify characters, understand sentences, and grasp the meaning of paragraphs.

Writing Skills

At higher levels, writing Chinese characters and sentences, expressing ideas, and composing essays on given topics are emphasized.
